The City of Hamilton will be investing millions of dollars over the next three years, with the goal of creating over 1,200 affordable and supportive housing units by 2027.

The city notes that the investments will go towards projects at various stages of development, including those in the pre-construction phase, those in construction, and even those that are post-construction.

Thus, it should be noted that the funding is not being used to launch new affordable housing projects, but to support those that are already in the works.

The city says that “funding will be strategically allocated to support each stage to ensure timely delivery of these much-needed housing solutions.”

The funding is part of the city’s Affordable Housing Development Project Stream that was developed in partnership between the city’s Housing Secretariat Division and the Planning and Economic Development Department.

The city says that the stream “is designed to provide a clear and consistent process for allocating funding to new affordable housing construction projects annually.”

They note that the stream also “ensures that all potential affordable housing developers have an equal opportunity to pursue available funding.

The city will be investing $17.8 million in 2025, which will reportedly be made up of surplus funds from 2024 as well as funding from the 2025 budget.

That investment will go towards eight different projects to support 147 affordable units and 25 supportive units.

Additionally, in the 2024 tax budget, the city committed $4 million annually for affordable housing and $10.3 million annually for supportive housing over three years.

In January 2025, the city had already taken $8.2 million from that commitment to fund 11 projects that will help deliver 440 affordable housing units and 435 supportive units.

The city then says that a future investment of about $15 million in 2026 will go towards two new projects that will add 105 affordable units and 51 supportive units.

Overall, the city funds will support a total of 21 housing projects to create approximately 692 affordable units and 511 supportive units by 2027.

The city says that the units will “support singles, families, Indigenous people, women, and women-led households.”

Units will also go to people on the Access to Housing Waitlist and those experiencing homelessness who are on the city’s By-name Priority List.

Hamilton’s City Manager Marnie Cluckie said in a press release, “These investments are a crucial part of our long-term housing strategy for Hamilton.”

“We are taking a comprehensive and sustainable approach, fostering partnerships, and prioritizing projects that will create affordable and supportive housing options for residents.”
