Ontario Premier Doug Ford was in Stoney Creek on Monday to announce that construction at the new Confederation GO Station is complete and that train service will begin on Monday, Oct. 27.
A press release states that all existing trains to and from Niagara Falls will stop at the station.
Currently, GO trains make three roundtrips daily between Niagara Falls and Union Station.
However, the province says that they will also be increasing train service across the GO network starting Oct. 27, meaning that even more trips are expected to serve the station.
Currently, on weekdays, GO trains pass through the Confederation GO area on the way to Union Station at around 7:40 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 9:45 p.m.
Weekday trains back towards Hamilton from Toronto are in the Confederation GO area around 10:30 a.m., 6:45 p.m., and 11:30 p.m.
On weekends, trains towards Union Station pass through around 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 9:15 p.m. (Sundays only), and 10:15 p.m. (Saturdays only).
Weekend trains back to Hamilton from Toronto currently pass through around 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m. (Sundays only), and 7:15 p.m. (Saturdays only).
With the schedule changes coming on Oct. 27, it is unclear if those times will remain the same.
The station, which is located on Centennial Parkway near the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), reportedly features a fully accessible platform with canopies, bicycle racks, a pick-up and drop-off area, and 148 parking spots.
Ford says that the completed station is part of “the largest transit expansion in North America” that his government is currently working on.
“The opening of Confederation GO Station will be a game changer for residents in East Hamilton and Stoney Creek, while bringing much-needed relief to Burlington and West Harbour GO,” Ford added.
Confederation GO has already been serving GO bus Route 12 since 2019 and Route 11 since 2021.
Local Member of Provincial Parliament Neil Lumsden, who represents Hamilton East–Stoney Creek, says that the government “is getting it done for residents” and that the station’s opening “will help commuters spend less time in traffic, and more time with their friends and family.”
The opening of Confederation GO marks the first new GO station to open in four years in the province, although more stations will soon follow.
Major construction is also underway at East Harbour GO in Toronto, just east of the Don Valley Parkway and south of Eastern Avenue, and Woodbine GO in north Etobicoke on Highway 27 between the existing Etobicoke North and Malton GO stations.
