Winnipeg-based agribusiness company Parrish & Heimbecker Limited (P&H), which specializes in flour milling and pea processing, recently announced a significant expansion of their facility at the Port of Hamilton.
P&H self-describes themselves as a “Canadian, family-owned agribusiness with roots in the agriculture industry dating back to 1909,” with over 70 locations across Canada and “trade links across the world.”
P&H already has a facility at Hamilton’s Pier 10, which is located at the north end of Wellington Street North, but the company now plans to construct a new flour mill and two new storage silos.
The new mill will be their third at Pier 10 and construction is set to start this spring.
The two new silos will reportedly be “dedicated to handling essential ingredients such as soymeal and distillers dried grains, as well as wheat for milling.”
John Heimbecker, the CEO of P&H said that with the expansion: “We are not just expanding our infrastructure; we are investing in the future of Canadian agriculture and the baking industry.”
“This strategic move reaffirms our dedication to meeting the needs of both our valued agricultural partners and our business partners,” he continued.
The first flour mill at Pier 10 was built in 2017, but P&H then doubled their capacity in 2020 with the addition of a second mill.
The company says that the new expansion project will “solidify P&H’s position as the single-largest user of Ontario wheat.”
The lands at the Port of Hamilton are operated by the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA Ports), which has had a partnership with P&H for 15 years.
HOPA says that they have been “growing a leading agri-food cluster at the Port of Hamilton.”
Ian Hamilton, President and CEO of HOPA personally expressed his congratulations to P&H in a press release.
“We applaud P&H’s growth at the Port of Hamilton, and their success in increasing grain exports along with value-added food processing,” said Hamilton.
“We are committed to continuing to invest in the very best transportation and supply chain infrastructure to enable companies to invest and grow.”
There are 14 agri-food companies located at the port and agrifood represents 31 per cent of the port’s overall cargo mix.
In the city of Hamilton overall there are more than 120 food ingredient companies.
The sector is responsible for 105,000 jobs and $48 billion in economic activity in the Province of Ontario.
The announcement regarding P&H’s expansion comes just weeks after Sucro Can Sourcing LLC announced a $135 million investment to build Canada’s largest sugar refinery at the Port of Hamilton’s Pier 15.
