Swedish company IKEA, known as the largest furniture retailer in the world, recently bought 65 acres of land on Hamilton Mountain.

The land purchase, made in July, cost $82 million.

Located at 212 Glover Road near Twenty Road East, the lot was initially owned by Paletta International Corporation. Paletta has developments and land holdings throughout Ontario.

Unfortunately for many, the Hamilton Mountain location will not be the site of a new store. Rather, IKEA is hoping to build a fulfillment centre. That means that the closest store location for Hamiltonians will continue to be the IKEA in Burlington on Plains Rd E.

The only other IKEA-affiliated location in Hamilton is an online order pick-up station at 651 Upper James St. There is also a pick-up station in St. Catharines at 459 Welland Ave. Each station is limited to online order pick-up only – they do not carry inventory, and, as such, their services are well short of a typical store.

Still, the opening of a new fulfillment centre would be a key economic opportunity for the City of Hamilton and would bolster the local job market. However, plans are in the very early stages.

The land purchase and future plans for a fulfillment centre follow a growing trend on Hamilton Mountain. Strategically located near Hamilton International Airport, Hamilton Mountain has seen the opening of a large new Amazon facility and multi-million dollaDHL shipping facility in recent months. The area will continue to grow.

And while IKEA has previously said that they want to expand to twenty-four Canadian locations by 2025, that number will remain at fifteen locations for now, including six locations in Ontario.

Those six Ontario locations are Burlington, Etobicoke, North York, Ottawa, Downtown Toronto, and Vaughan.
