Over a dozen Hamilton workplaces have made this year’s ‘Hamilton-Niagara Top Employers’ list.

Published annually since 2008 by Mediacorp Canada, the competition is organized by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers and recognizes businesses that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work.

Locally-headquartered employers on the 2023 list include ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Hamilton, Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare, Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority, City of Hamilton, McMaster University, and Mohawk College.

“Progressive employers invest in professional development, so it’s no surprise given the range industries in the region, many of which require constant upskilling,” said Richard Yerema, executive editor of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project at Mediacorp. “The employers chosen this year have distinguished themselves by their commitment to ongoing development and long-term career advancement, which helps attract and retain talented employees.”

One of the city’s largest employers, Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) was named to the list for the eighth time since the annual competition started 16 years ago.

“HHS is a community of 15,000 staff, physicians and volunteers who make us the largest employer in Hamilton. Being recognized as a top employer is important because our business is all about the people who work for us, and the people they care for,” said HHS president and CEO Rob MacIsaac. “We are privileged to have a huge team of compassionate people who care deeply about our patients.”

Employers are evaluated and selected based on: (1) Workplace; (2) Work Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health, Financial & Family Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time Off; (5) Employee Communications; (6) Performance Management; (7) Training & Skills Development; and (8) Community Involvement.

Another major source of employment locally, ArcelorMittal Dofasco was named a Top Employer for the ninth-consecutive year.

The Hamilton-based iron and steel manufacturer, which employs nearly 5,000 full-time workers, said it was “thrilled” by the designation on LinkedIn.

Mohawk College was named to the list for the tenth-straight year.

“Regardless of position or role with the organization, faculty and staff contribute to our students’ success. You know you are making a difference here, and it leaves you with a sense of accomplishment that is often missing at other workplaces,” said Megan Mascarin, chief human resources officer.

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) was named a Top Employer for the tenth time since the competition’s inception.

“Today, what sets St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton apart is that same mission of caring; looking after the whole person — mind, body and spirit,” said Cheryl Watterson, senior organizational development consultant with SJHH. “That legacy of caring, to serve and support those in need and the commitment to that mission is one of the cornerstones of SJHH, and one of the key reasons it attracts so many great employees.”

SJHH was selected for a number of reasons, including its focus on employee wellness.

The hospital offers a number of initiatives to help employees prioritize their wellness, including access to a platform called Wellbeats (with virtual fitness classes, nutrition guidance and mindfulness programming), wellness challenges, and lunch and learns on various dimensions of wellness, such as intellectual, financial, and spiritual wellness.

The full Hamilton-Niagara Top Employers list for 2023 was announced in a special magazine issue published online in the Hamilton Spectator last Thursday, November 24.

All employers with a head office or principal place of business in the Hamilton-Burlington-Niagara area, public or private and regardless of size, are eligible for the annual competition.
