Organizations across Hamilton beginning to hire students for summer jobs

Even though summer is about five months away, many organizations across the City of Hamilton are already beginning to hire students for summer jobs.

While most positions are geared towards post-secondary students, some jobs also take high school students as young as 14 years of age.

All positions have a different application deadline date, although some deadlines tend to be extended.

Preference is usually given to those who apply as soon as possible.

It should be noted that some positions have specific requirements such as a G licence or Standard First Aid with CPR Level C.

CITY OF HAMILTON

COURSE SPECIFIC / ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS

Running for three months and geared towards post-secondary students, the city aims to match applicants with a position in their area of study.

The city says that students could possibly be hired as By-Law Officers, Municipal Law Enforcement Officers, Landscape Architect Assistants, Historical Interpreters, Museum Collections Assistants, Special Support Case Aides, Engineer Assistants, and Administrative Assistants.

Some of the positions require a G licence. The positions pay $17.61 per hour.

GENERAL LABOURER

General Labourer positions are also geared towards post-secondary students as they begin in early May and run until Labour Day.

Students are assigned to either Parks/Cemeteries/Horticulture, Play Structures, Golf and Stadium Operations, Waste Collection, Roads, Traffic, Forestry, Fleet and Facilities, or the Dundas Castle Historic Kitchen Garden.

Preference for Play Structure positions will be given to students with shop, construction, or painting experience.

Some of the positions require a G licence. The positions pay $17.61 per hour.

RECREATION SUMMER STUDENT – CAMP COUNSELLOR

Camp Counsellor positions run from June 23 until Aug. 22, 2025 and involve the supervising of children as part of the city’s summer camps that are based out of a recreation centre location.

These positions are open for senior high school and post-secondary students as the minimum age is 16. The position pays $17.20 per hour.

RECREATION SUMMER STUDENT – SUPIE COUNSELLOR

Supie Counsellors plan and deliver programming activities and games outside at a local City of Hamilton park from June 23 to Aug. 22, 2025.

These positions are open for all high school students and post-secondary students as the minimum age is 14. The position pays $17.20 per hour.

RECREATION SUMMER STUDENT – WADING POOL ATTENDANT

Wading Pool Attendants monitor wading pools across Hamilton and perform pool maintenance, reporting to the Aquatic Supervisor.

These positions are also open for all high school and post-secondary students with a minimum age of 14. Applicants must have a current Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion certification or higher and Standard First Aid with CPR Level C. The position pays $17.20 per hour.

HAMILTON PUBLIC LIBRARY

SUMMER LITERACY WORKER

These positions are open to senior high school students and post-secondary students and involve assisting library staff with the library’s annual Summer Reading Club, and the Reading and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Buddies program.

Although it should be noted that one of the job expectations for these positions is to “incorporate books and stories that highlight voices, experiences, and work by Indigenous, Black, 2SLGBTQIA+ people, as well as other racialized and minority groups into programming.”

The position pays $19.52 per hour and runs from June 3 to Aug. 23, 2025.

HAMILTON CONSERVATION AUTHORITY

WILD WATERWORKS

Wild Waterworks Waterpark at Confederation Park is hiring well over 100 people for their upcoming summer season.

Most positions run from May 4 until Sept. 1, 2025, with some beginning even earlier on April 13.

They are looking for Lifeguards, Water Park Attendants, Maintenance and Lawn Care Assistants, Assistant Pool Operators, Guest Services Representatives, Groups Coordinators, Cashiers, Security Officers, Team Leaders, and Supervisors.

Some positions are open to those as young as 14 years old.
