Earlier this month, officials from the City of Hamilton, McMaster University, and McMaster Innovation Park gathered to celebrate the official groundbreaking of a new hotel in the city’s west end.
The hotel will be a dual-branded property known as Hyatt Place Hamilton McMaster Innovation Park and Hyatt House McMaster Innovation Park.
It will be located on Longwood Road South overlooking Highway 403.
The Hyatt Place portion of the building will feature 78 rooms and be designed as a typical hotel.
Meanwhile, the Hyatt House will feature 84 suite-style accommodations meant for longer stays, which will include in-room kitchens.
Shared amenities will include a fitness centre, indoor saltwater pool, business centre, guest laundry, free Wi-Fi, parking, and a lobby lounge featuring all-day dining options.
A new “complete bar and restaurant” will also be located on-site and will be accessible to both hotel guests and the general public.
The development also includes meeting spaces ranging from 300 square feet to 2,800 square feet.
Construction is expected to take until fall 2026.
Gailene Tobin Vandenheuvel, CEO of McMaster Innovation Park, said in a press release, “The hotel is key to our vision for McMaster Innovation Park — a place where collaboration thrives, and innovation is accelerated.”
“It strengthens the Park as a global destination for research and commercialization. This new addition will elevate the experience for our tenants and partners, making it easier to host, engage, and build lasting relationships.”
McMaster Innovation Park is one of Canada’s top research and innovation parks and is home to over fifty companies in the Life Science, Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing and high-tech sectors.
The hotels will allow visitors an opportunity to stay on-site while working on extended stay placements or research collaborations at either the Park or McMaster University.
The hotels also provide a place to stay for those attending conferences and events in Hamilton.
The property is three kilometres away from the newly revamped TD Coliseum (formerly the FirstOntario Centre) and two kilometres away from McMaster University.
The hotel project is being led by The Kothari Group and Sigma Group.
The City of Hamilton’s Tourism Strategy identified in 2024 that the city has an “insufficient amount of high-quality economy hotels, no luxury hotels, and limited alternative accommodations,” such as cottages, camping, or glamping.
The new development will result in progress in increasing hotel capacity.
Hamilton City Council has also sought to increase the number of hotel rooms by approving a grant program for office-to-hotel conversions in Downtown Hamilton.
The initiative is called the Downtown Hamilton Office Conversion Grant (DHOCG) Program and also seeks to increase the number of office-to-residential conversions.
It is unclear how successful that program has been.
