On Monday, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy published its yearly Academic Ranking of World Universities, one of three established lists of the globe’s best post-secondary institutions released annually.

The top five spots in the world for 2022 were secured, in order, by Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Cambridge, and University of California, Berkeley.

Canada’s top-ranking school was once again the University of Toronto, coming in at 22, followed by the University of British Columbia (44), and McGill University (73).

Hamilton’s McMaster University ranked fourth in Canada and tied for 90 in the world, up two spots from last year, and a full eight places from 2020.

In terms of specific academic subjects, McMaster ranked an impressive 47 in the world for clinical medicine, the university’s best ranked program, second in Canada only to Toronto.

McMaster hasn’t placed outside the top 50 for clinical medicine since the ShanghaiRanking started assessing individual subjects in 2017.

The university’s civil engineering, public health, library and information science, metallurgical engineering and transportation science and engineering programs all ranked among the top 100 such subjects in the world.

A number of other programs ranked among the top 200 in the world, including nursing and human biological sciences.

In a short post to social media Tuesday, McMaster said it was “proud to have moved up in the rankings, and to have a number of programs and academic disciplines ranked among the best in the world”.

For its annual rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy positions more than 5,000 universities in 54 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences.
