Walmart Canada announced last week that they will be opening a new 140,000-square-foot supercentre at Hamilton’s Lime Ridge Mall in early 2027.
The store will reportedly feature a full grocery department with produce, a bakery, and a deli, expanded home, electronics, and apparel sections, and a Walmart Pharmacy.
Customers will also be able to access Walmart’s online order pickup and delivery options for groceries and other products.
The Walmart Supercentre will be located at the north end of the mall at the site of the former Sears store.
The new location will be the seventh Walmart store located in the City of Hamilton.
The retailer currently operates at Garner Road West in Ancaster, Dundas Street East in Waterdown, Upper James on Hamilton Mountain, Rymal Road on Hamilton Mountain, Barton Street East at the Centre Mall, and Centennial Parkway North in Stoney Creek.
The Upper James location is only three kilometres away from Lime Ridge Mall. It is unclear if that site will continue operating once the new supercentre opens.
Officials say that new Walmart signage at Lime Ridge Mall will be installed soon.
Shawn Fujiki, Senior Director of Real Estate with Walmart Canada, says that the new supercentre is part of the company’s $6.5 billion expansion across Canada over the next five years.
“As the City of Hamilton continues to grow, this new Supercentre will help us to better serve our local customers through a convenient store location and expanded ability to serve the area through our delivery service,” said Fujiki.
So far in 2025, Walmart Canada has opened new supercentres in Port Credit, Ont. and Oakville, Ont. and a new distribution centre in Vaughan, Ont.
In addition to Hamilton, the retailer is planning to open three more supercentres over the next two years in Fort McMurray, Alta., Sherbrooke, Que., and Tsuut’ina Nation, Alta.
Andy Traynor, General Manager of Lime Ridge Mall, also commented on the news.
“We are excited to welcome Walmart to Lime Ridge Mall. This addition reflects our commitment to providing our community with a diverse mix of retailers and an exceptional shopping experience,” he said.
The announcement of the new Walmart Supercentre is the first major development at the mall since it was bought by Primaris Real Estate Investment Trust from its long-time owner, Cadillac Fairview, in June 2025.
Cadillac Fairview was actually planning to demolish the former Sears location, replacing it with 100,000 square feet of retail space, two 12-storey residential towers with 320 total units, and a parking structure.
It appears that those plans are no longer taking place.
However, with the closure of the 125,000-square-foot Hudson’s Bay location at the south end of Lime Ridge Mall, more potential space for new development has opened up.
According to Cadillac Fairview’s previous plans, the south end of the mall, near the Lincoln Alexander Parkway, was set to become the site of a new HSR bus terminal.
It remains to be seen what further plans Primaris has for the property.
